It is a very pretty book...from the outside. Once you try to read it, it loses some of it's appeal. The grammar is poor. The editing is clunky. There are far too few paragraphs, some of them spanning multiple pages. There are no quotation marks to define naration vs. conversation and darn little to help you determine who is speaking. The word choice is...interestingly overdone. To be honest it sounds mostly like the first essay after a child is introduced to the thesaurus. I have a much older copy of this book, clearly translated by a different person and just as clearly one with a far better grasp of the English language. The only reason I bought this copy is that mine was broken in half. After trying to read the Barnes and Noble edition I believe I shall duct tape the old copy back together and stick with that. This is going back to the store. If you are a parent looking to introduce your child to this story DO NOT BUY THIS. It will only convince them that this is a painful and toothpulling experience to be waded through. If you already like the book and want a pretty copy...sitting on a shelf looking good is about all this is good for. Unless you don't have indoor plumbing. Or roll your own cigarettes. Perhaps, maybe, if you have a REALLY wobbly table.

I really have been enjoying this book and was so glad it was unabridged.  I know the other reviewer on here was upset that the wording is hard for children to understand but we read it as a family and talk about it.  It gives the children exposure to this older style of writing and will pave the way for them to read older books and documents and be able to comprehend them.

I gave The Swiss Family Robinson a 12/16. The setting wasn't believable because they stayed on an island for around a year without a source of food or drinking water. The book was too long because the author spent too much time putting unnecessary details so the book was kind of getting boring. bi liked the ending because the author didn't spend too much time at the end of the book. The plot made sense because it went with the setting. I would recommend this book to people who like to read books a lot.

Enjoyed the book quite a bit. It would have been nice if they had included the Epilogue from the first edition, as this helps provide a little closure. Also there is more than one version. I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe this is the original. Others go on longer with additions that I believe were made by others.

This is one of many Leatherbound Classics that I have purchased and it like the others does not disappoint. Beautiful leather cover makes this classic tale even more appealing.
